    University of Derby

    The University of Derby is one of the youngest British universities established under the 1992 law. It is located in Derby in central England and is today an incredibly dynamic and innovative higher education institution offering a high level of education on over 300 courses.     Although the university received university status in 1992, its history dates back to the mid-19th century.     Excellent academic and teaching facilities

    In the last 10 years alone, the university has invested over £200 million in university facilities, which are considered some of the best in the entire United Kingdom. Among the most interesting ones are:

    • The Devonshire Dome in Buxton – this is a historic 18th-century building that has been restored and transformed into a campus of the university (Buxton Campus) – its distinctive dome has a diameter of 44 meters and is one of the largest in the world – students studying Events Management gain experience through events organized here,
    • a completely new and highly modern STEM building for the Faculty of Engineering, Technology, and Computing.
    • Derby Theatre – the university, as one of the few in the country, has its theatre where students can gain real experience on stage during theater courses.
    • Crown Court – The University of Derby was the first institution in the country to establish its courtroom facilities for law students.
    • Own a hospital branch with fully equipped facilities for medical students.

    Additionally, students can use the new sports center, spa, as well as a restaurant where meals are prepared by students from the Hospitality and Culinary Arts program.

    Science and directions

    The University of Derby offers undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees, and Ph.D. programs, as well as short supplementary courses as part of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Education is offered in both on-campus and online modes.

    There are over 300 courses available at the undergraduate level, covering 48 different subjects. The university offers the possibility of studying two subjects concurrently with a single bachelor’s degree.

    Awards and rankings

    One of the recent achievements of the university was its rise to the top 30 universities in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide 2019. In the span of 3 years, the university has seen a rise of over 40 places in the rankings, which is undoubtedly an impressive achievement.

    According to the latest HESA ranking, as many as 96% of the university’s graduates find employment within 6 months of receiving their diploma. The university has an extensive work placement program – students can gain experience in companies such as Bombardier, Rolls Royce, and Toyota (which is why programs related to automotive engineering are popular).

    The high level of teaching at the University of Derby has been recognized by the British Ministry of Education, which awarded it “gold status” as part of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF Gold) program.

    Admission requirements

    According to the International Student Barometer survey (2016), the University of Derby is the second most recommended university for international students in the UK. About 1,700 foreigners from over 100 countries study here every day.

    Polish candidates for first-cycle studies should have passed the Matura exam at the level of at least 60% in all subjects, as well as an appropriate grade in selected subjects at the advanced level, depending on the chosen field of study.

    When it comes to English language proficiency, the requirements also vary depending on the course. Generally, for international students, the university requires an IELTS score of 4.5.     Funding for studies – scholarships and loans

    For international students, the University of Derby has prepared special discounts ranging from £500 to even £2000, although these mainly apply to students from outside the European Union. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students can apply for scholarships during their studies, which amount to either £3000 or £5000.

    Polish students can also benefit from student loans on favorable terms from the British government to support their studies.

    Accommodation and living in Derby

    Opting for studies at the University of Derby, you can choose to stay in university accommodation or rent private accommodation on your own. The university has 8 halls of residence in Derby, as well as one building each in Buxton and Chesterfield. The weekly cost of renting a room in a hall of residence averages from £110 to £150 per week.
