It is known for the discovery of the DNA profiling method, which allowed, among other things, the identification of the remains of King Richard III and found application in forensics.

    The roots of the university date back to 1921, when a higher education institution was founded in Leicester as a living memorial to commemorate the victims of World War I. It received university status in 1957. The university is known worldwide for its significant achievements in research, particularly in the fields of physics, astronomy, and genetics. For this reason, in 2011, the university was selected as one of the four High-Performance Computing (HPC) centers in the UK for theoretical astrophysics and particle physics.

    The University of Leicester is located in Leicester, in central England, which is the largest city in the East Midlands region.

    The university is associated with the Attenborough family, which has been connected to it for years. The father of the well-known brothers Richard (actor) and David (renowned biologist and explorer) served as the headmaster of the school. One of the university’s buildings was named The Attenborough Tower in honor of their surname.

    Admission requirements

    The university has prepared a list of minimum requirements that candidates from Poland must meet to secure a place among the students at the University of Leicester.

    To be admitted to undergraduate studies, the following are necessary:
    • overall high school diploma grade – minimum 72%
    • depending on the course, a grade of 80% or 75% in subjects at an advanced level.
    Attention – admission requirements vary depending on the field of study!

    Master’s degree applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or an engineering degree with a grade of at least 4.0.

    On the other hand, the requirements for doctoral (Ph.D.) studies are more varied – in some cases, a bachelor’s degree is sufficient, while in others, a master’s degree is required. Practical knowledge of research methods is also required.

    Foreign candidates must also demonstrate an adequate command of the English language. These requirements are confirmed by language proficiency certificates such as IELTS (minimum 5.5 points across four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing), TOEFL, Pearson Test of English, Cambridge ESOL Skills for Life, and others.     Funding for studies – scholarships and loans
    The University of Leicester offers various scholarships for international students, primarily providing discounts on tuition fees. Depending on the program, these scholarships range from 10% to 28%.

    Students from European Union countries can also apply for a loan from the British government to cover tuition fees for each year of study. Repayment of this loan begins once annual income from employment after completing studies reaches at least £25,000, following the repayment guidelines.

    Accommodation and living in Leicester

    City Living is located close to the university’s main buildings in the city center, while Oadby Student Village is an undergraduate student community located close to the university’s botanical garden. Yes, it’s about 3 miles away from the main campus, but within the Oadby Student Village, you can find various amenities such as a shop, a cinema hall, and even the Village Pub.
